On October 31, 1517, the German monk Martin Luther publicly condemned the false doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church, calling people to return to the Bible. That call is considered the birth of the Protestant Reformation, a radical rediscovery of the essential truths of Christianity. The historical and theological importance of Luther’s life and ministry are explained in depth in the free Luther Study Guide, available below.

Luther was known as a prolific writer and preacher who ministered powerfully during a tumultuous age. As many modern-day pastors know, it can be challenging to focus on one’s family amid the pressures of vocational ministry — so it’s encouraging to know that Luther was such a deeply devoted father and husband. This side of Luther is vividly seen in LUTHER: A Visual Book, a beautifully illustrated companion to the LUTHER documentary, with additional supplementary content.

The bold actions of Martin Luther and others five centuries ago led to a revived focus on the core doctrines of Christianity, from the authority of the Bible to justification by faith. The dramatic story of how God used Luther to bring this about is depicted vibrantly in LUTHER: The Life and Legacy of the German Reformer. This award-winning documentary features interviews with leading experts as well as animated dramatizations of Luther’s life, providing a thoughtful and accessible look at a key figure in the Reformation.
